Abraham was neither a Jew nor a Christian. He was upright and devoted to God, never an idolater,
مَا كَانَ إِبْرَاهِيمُ يَهُودِيًّا وَلَا نَصْرَانِيًّا وَلَـٰكِنْ كَانَ حَنِيفًا مُسْلِمًا وَمَا كَانَ مِنَ الْمُشْرِكِينَ
mā kāna ib'rāhīmu yahūdiyyan walā naṣrāniyyan walākin kāna ḥanīfan mus'liman wamā kāna mina l-mush'rikīna

- Abraham was neither a "Jew" nor a "Christian", but was one who turned away from all that is false, having surrendered himself unto God; and he was not of those who ascribe divinity to aught beside Him.

- Abraham was neither a Jew nor a Christian, but he was one inclining toward truth, a Muslim [submitting to Allāh]. And he was not of the polytheists.
