because they practised things that incurred God’s wrath, and disdained to please Him? He makes their deeds go to waste.
ذَٰلِكَ بِأَنَّهُمُ اتَّبَعُوا مَا أَسْخَطَ اللَّهَ وَكَرِهُوا رِضْوَانَهُ فَأَحْبَطَ أَعْمَالَهُمْ
dhālika bi-annahumu ittabaʿū mā askhaṭa l-laha wakarihū riḍ'wānahu fa-aḥbaṭa aʿmālahum

- That is because they have followed what angers God, and have been averse to His good pleasure, so He has made their works to fail.
- Muhammad Asad
- This, because they were wont to pursue what God condemns and to hate [whatever would meet with] His goodly acceptance: and so He has caused all their [good] deeds to come to nought.
- Sahih International
- That is because they followed what angered Allāh and disliked [what earns] His pleasure, so He rendered worthless their deeds.
