Quranic root

فند

f · n · d

The root conveys heaviness, force, and substantial mass, with things or parts bearing upon one another. Its lexical branches include a mountain mass or spur, burdensome censure, impaired judgment, and falsehood.

The physical image of a mountain portion or peak develops into senses of weight or severity in reproach, mental impairment associated especially with extreme age, and falsehood—possibly because the liar is blamed or bears a heavy sin. These root-level relations are not automatically meanings of every derivative.

  1. To attribute weakness or unsoundness of judgment to someone; to deem someone mentally impaired.

In لَوْلَا أَنْ تُفَنِّدُونِ (Quran 12:94), the construction describes treating the speaker as weak-minded. The verse is also interpreted contextually as “blame or reproach me,” but that is treated here as an interpretation of the same construction rather than a separate basic sense.
