Quranic root

ورد

w · r · d

The root has two principal semantic orientations: coming to or arriving at something, especially water, and a rose-like or reddish-yellow color.

The arrival sense extends from approaching water to destinations, routes, watering times, groups arriving, thirst, and figurative approaches. A distinct color branch develops around the rose and reddish-yellow shades, including descriptions of animals, vegetation, skies, and dyed objects.

Cautions

Points that affect how this root should be read.

  • For وَرَدَ and وِرْد, coming to a destination does not uniformly entail entering it; the Quranic interpretation of the eschatological arrival passage is explicitly debated.

  • The Quranic وِرْد in 19:86 preserves both the arrival-at-water image and the lexical interpretation 'thirsty'; the contextual gloss alone is not treated as an independent sense.
