Pray for the Truth

Quranic root

ضعف

ḍ · ʿ · f

The root develops along two distinct semantic directions: lack of strength, and adding a like amount so that something becomes doubled or multiplied.

The first direction yields weakness in body, judgment, condition, or power, and the treatment or estimation of someone as weak. The second yields equal amounts, doubling, multiplication, and things composed of doubled or layered parts.

Cautions

Points that affect how this root should be read.

  • A Lane citation for the disputed dialectal interpretation of ضَعِيف uses a historical reference rendered as [xi. 93], whereas the independently supplied QAC occurrence is 11:91; the citation is therefore not treated as a modern location for that interpretation.

  • ضَعْف and ضُعْف are reported as variant pronunciations for weakness, while ضِعْف follows the separate numerical branch meaning a like amount or multiple. The numerical implications of ضِعْف depend on its construction.

Unassigned or ambiguous evidence

  • The Himyerite interpretation of ضَعِيف as “blind” is explicitly reported but rejected by another cited authority, and its Lane verse citation does not independently match the supplied QAC location; it is retained as a disputed Quran-linked sense rather than treated as the ordinary Quranic meaning.
