Pray for the Truth

Quranic root

حيي

ḥ · y · y

The root has two principal orientations: life and vitality, opposed to death; and shame or modest restraint, opposed to shamelessness.

The life branch extends to growth, sensation, intellect, enduring life, revival, and greetings originally phrased as prayers for life. The other branch concerns shrinking from what is improper, shame, and refraining.

Cautions

Points that affect how this root should be read.

  • The Form-X verb has two Quranic branches: sparing someone and feeling shame or refraining; the immediate construction determines the sense.

  • حَيَوَان in 29:64 is an intensive expression for abiding life, not merely the ordinary collective noun 'animals'.

Unassigned or ambiguous evidence

  • lane-unit:Hyy:16281:g1:main: مَحْيَاة 'land abounding with serpents' is explicitly equated with a form assigned to the different root حوى, so it is not confidently assigned to this root.
