Quranic root

صفر

ṣ · f · r

The root has two prominent orientations: yellow or dark coloration and emptiness or vacancy. Classical Arabic also develops distinct branches for brass or copper, whistling, a month or season, and various plants.

The lexical sources present these as differentiated branches rather than one single derivational sequence. The Quranic forms center on color and becoming yellow; emptiness, metal, sound, seasonal, medical, and botanical uses remain separate lexical developments.

Cautions

Points that affect how this root should be read.

  • The reading of صَفْرَاءُ as black in 2:69 is explicitly reported but disputed; yellow is the ordinary reading.

  • The Quranic صُفْرٌ in 77:33 is interpreted either as the plural adjective أَصْفَرٌ, with yellow or dark camel coloration, or as the metal noun صُفْرٌ; the alternatives should not be conflated.

  • The exact derivation and force of the expression مَصَفِّرُ اسْتِهِ are disputed in the Classical evidence, so its competing explanations are retained.
