Pray for the Truth

Quranic root

حصد

ḥ · ṣ · d

The root expresses two related but distinct orientations: cutting something, especially harvesting, and making something tight, firm, or compact.

The cutting branch extends from reaping crops to harvested produce, harvest time, and figurative mowing down or destruction. The firmness branch appears in tightly twisted cords, compact armor, sound judgment, settled affairs, and collective strengthening.

Cautions

Points that affect how this root should be read.

  • حَصِيدٌ has both a literal harvested-produce sense and a Quran-attested resultative sense meaning cut down or destroyed; the latter is not merely an English gloss variation.

  • حَصَادٌ and حَصِيدٌ are retained as separate public forms because the former denotes harvesting or harvest time, while the latter denotes the reaped result or something mown down.
