Pray for the Truth

Quranic root

حقق

ḥ · q · q

The root centers on making something firm, sound, fitting, and established as true or right, in contrast to falsehood.

From the idea of sound correspondence and secure establishment develop the meanings of truth and reality, what is due or obligatory, verification and validation, entitlement, and disputing a claim. Other branches extend to fittingness, central joining or sockets, and things that have reached a settled condition.

Cautions

Points that affect how this root should be read.

  • حَقِيقٌ عَلَى in 7:105 has reported readings and interpretations of obligation versus disposition or fitness; the form is therefore defined broadly enough to preserve both.

  • The interpretation of بِالْحَقِّ in 15:8 as a decreed or destined event is explicitly reported but is not the only interpretation.

  • The historical Lane notation for one reported death interpretation is not converted into a modern verse location.

  • Some Classical branches belong to homonymous or derived headwords and are kept separate rather than being folded into the Quranic meanings of حَقّ.
