Pray for the Truth

Quranic root

جدد

j · d · d

The root develops three principal semantic branches: greatness or exalted status, fortune or prosperity, and cutting or separation.

The cutting sense extends to what is newly cut or newly made, hence “new”; to visible stripes or paths marked off from their surroundings; and to dry or severed things such as a milkless udder. The branches of majesty and worldly fortune remain distinct lexical developments.

Cautions

Points that affect how this root should be read.

  • The noun جَدّ in 72:3 has both a majesty/greatness interpretation and a divine-effusion interpretation; these are retained as separate Quranic senses rather than collapsed into worldly fortune.

  • The Quranic form جُدَد in 35:27 is displayed under the supported singular citation form جُدَّة; the Classical evidence also records variant readings and related forms.

  • Several rare Classical entries preserve explicitly reported alternatives, including the contradictory descriptions of جُدّ as a well with abundant or scanty water and the uncertain reading of مُجِدّ in the quick-paced-camel phrase.

Unassigned or ambiguous evidence

  • The quick-paced-camel phrase in lane-unit:jdd:46124:g1:sub2 is represented, but the source itself is uncertain whether the form should be read مُجِدَّة or مُجَدَّة.
